    Sterile Room Med Prep ScriptPro

The University of Kansas Hospital is a 550-bed tertiary and quaternary care hospital located near the Kansas-Missouri state line. It is also the primary teaching hospital for the University of Kansas Medical Center. The KU Hospital wanted to increase the presence of the pharmacist at critical risk points during IV admixture preparation, while also making the most efficient use of pharmacy staff.

Brian O’Neal, MS & PharmD and assistant director of pharmacy at the time, engaged with ScriptPro to adapt Telepharmacy for the hospital’s clean room. The new product is called Telepharmacy for Sterile Room Medication Preparation (SRMP).

Not only did SRMP technology allow for better use of the pharmacists’ time and talent, it also added safeguards to the chemotherapy preparation process. They can now electronically document the steps for compounding by using pictures taken during the process, then store them along with the prescription information. Using SRMP, the pharmacist can review all the steps retrospectively and be located outside the clean room (no need to gown up many times a day). Pharmacists at KU Hospital have more assurance that the product they are checking has been mixed correctly, allowing them to better serve the many patients who are treated at the University of Kansas Hospital.
